Troubleshooting
One user has noted that upon new releases, he sometimes had to erase the preference file to avoid crashes. I still haven't located this bug, but please report back if you have the same issue. Preference file is located at ~/Library/Preferences/com.bay.ReaderNotifier.plist
Q&A
Reader Notifier is provided as is. It should be fairly easy to understand the application and as such it does not need a help file. However, this section is for things perhaps not so obvious for the ordinary user:
- I want to be able to choose more than one label to look for! Well yes, while that is a mighty fine idea, Reader Notifier is made with the philosophy of as little post-processing as possible (to keep your computer clean of unnecessary CPU-cycles). So as long as Google does not have the option of viewing several labels at a single time in the Google Reader interface, it will not be a feature of Reader Notifier either. However, as a workaround, you can just make a new label and add it to all the feeds you want Reader Notifier to check. It is indeed possible for one single feed to have multiple labels.
- I want Reader Notifier to startup automatically! Okay then, you should go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, and then drag the Application icon into the list.
- I want to disable growl notifictions! Go to System Preferences -> Growl, and uncheck the box at Reader Notifier. Expect never to be bothered again.
- I want - insert something here - to be implemented! Well that's probably a nice idea, but I won't know until you let me know! Why not use the comment function below?.
Please help if you can
If you are of a creative nature, and want to make new menubar icons (or enhance the existing once) please send me suggestions! Especially the BW image displayed when no unread items exists is a bit rough.

Hello, Troels. Could you update the source code? I have an idea on improving Reader Notifier. (May 01, 2008)
troelsbay
Hi AmaxSkv, sure, the source is updated to latest version now. (May 01, 2008)
AmaxSkv
Hi again, Troels. Thanks for updating the code, I've made Reader Notifier localizable, so could you contact me about the code? My email: [removed by admin] (May 01, 2008)
troelsbay
Alright, I've emailed you with questions/details. (May 01, 2008)
ig@interaktivgrafika.hu
hey, what's your email address, I can send ya menubar icons. (May 08, 2008)
skrach@skrach.at
Hello and thank you for Reader Notifier! I have a question: Is it possible to disable the sound which always comes when new RSS articles are discovered. I couldn't find any option to do this. Thank you! (May 09, 2008)
troelsbay
Hi scrach, yes, just go to the preferences and check the box called "Don't play sound..." (May 13, 2008)
skrach@skrach.at
Hello troelsbay! Thank you! I've now checked unchecked the checkbox which seems to have solved the problem. It appears as if the default is to play the sound. BUT the checkbox still being unchecked. (May 13, 2008)
skrach@skrach.at
Update: Sound still playing. Unchecking the checkbox doesn't seem to help. If you like you can contact me via e-Mail so I don't pollute your comments :-) (May 13, 2008)

Morning, i cant subscribe to google reader with the notifier. i choosed it as my default reader in safari, but nothing happens. Could you help me? (May 14, 2008)
troelsbay
Dear einfachtimo. The comment function is not for support questions. This software is provided free, and unless there is a bug (which there seems to be not, I just checked) I cannot help you. I can however redirect you to the <a href="http://code.google.com/p/readernotifier/wiki/Help">User-to-user help page</a> (May 14, 2008)

Hi, i really like your app, it does almost everything i need. There is only thing i would is that when you send growl notification, you dont send one by item but only one telling how many items have been updated. Exactly like NetNewsWire does. The problem with the current method is that when you have a lot of subscription your screen becomes cluttered with growl notifications :s Thanks for your great work (May 16, 2008)
troelsbay
Hi martin, it depends on how many unread items Reader Notifier finds - if it finds too many, it only shows one telling that it found new. If it only finds a couple, it shows them separately. There is also a setting in the preferences to control that. (May 16, 2008)
martin.guillon
Nice i didnt see that ! But could we have 1 max simultaneous notification? currently the min is 2 (May 21, 2008)
peterjeliot
Great application, but I absolutely can't stand how often it gets stuck, and uses 100% cpu! This happens at least 4 or 5 times a week, and it really gets on my nerves, especially because it makes my fans run faster and louder. (June 05, 2008)
kamplingj@googlemail.com
Nice app! Could you perhaps add an option to start an app when clicking on "Go to reader"? I you Fluid to use my Google Reader. Thanks Jan (June 17, 2008)
robert.croma
I'm getting sites in my notifier unread items list list that I've never subscribed to. These sites so not appear in my reader account when I log in. Any clues as to why? (June 25, 2008)

I just want to say thank you!!! (July 15, 2008)

Love your app! 2 things: Could you add the ability to turn the notification sound off? And add the ability to use multiple google accounts at once? But seriously -- GREAT app! :) (August 10, 2008)

This is a great little app, but I've got a bug for you - for some reason, if I have above a certain number of unread items in Reader's list (approximately 10 or so), the count in the menu bar jumps by 44, so it goes 8, 9, 10, 55 . I have no idea why it's doing this. Any help would be appreciated. (August 17, 2008)
choi9999@yahoo.com
Really like the app -- is there any way to specify which browser items open in (Firefox, Safari)? (October 16, 2008)
bdwilson
Great piece of software! The only thing this is missing is nested contextual menu items for each of the different feeds (see RSS Menu for an example). Otherwise, great work! (October 19, 2008)

Great app...Thank you! I may have found a bug. When there are no items left in Google Reader, I get the message from the Notifier "Failed to connect to Google Reader. Please try again." Once there are approximately 20 items in the Reader then the Notifier connects and reflects the correct number of unread items. Thanks again. (October 21, 2008)
choi9999@yahoo.com
Also, could Reader Notifier be made to remember preferences even after the computer reboots? It doesn't seem to do so on my computer. (November 09, 2008)

I've translated Reader Notifier in French. Where can I send you the localization ? (December 06, 2008)

I've made a couple of menubar icons, only for the regular state though. http://mrwonderr.deviantart.com/art/Reader-Notifier-Menubar-Mod-106258241 Let me know if you're interested in using them, or if not. :P (December 15, 2008)

Hi there! Ever since Google Reader switched over to their new format a week or so ago, I've been unable to use 'Mark all as read' (it just says "There are new unread items available online. Mark all as read has been canceled."). Just wanted to give you a heads up on this - the software is still great and I'd be lost without it. Thanks! (December 27, 2008)

I would love a pref to hide icon in menubar. (December 28, 2008)

Unfortunately, I cannot use this application. I encounted error the "It seems you do not have a password in the Keychain. Please go to the preferences now and supply your password" although filled in username and password. What shall i do ? Mac OSX 10.5.4 Leopard (December 29, 2008)

Sometimes, Reader Notifier just keeps saying "Updating..." and seems unable to check new items. (January 12, 2009)
alexander.browne
I love Reader Notifier! I was thinking that it would be nice if when a growl notification for multiple new items appears, clicking on it would open google reader. (February 16, 2009)
cloud.jorijn
Hey, it would be cool if the interval for checking Google Reader could be lowered to 30secs or 1min. Love your app, fits perfectly with Gmail and Calendar notifier :)!! (February 27, 2009)
k.b.schmitt
Like many others here, I will first a) praise the program and then b) make my requests. :) Here goes: I love Reader Notifier, and keep up the great work! Wondering if there was a way to strip out the HTML tags from the preview tooltips when you hover over an unread item, and also if there could be a preference to specify a standalone app (e.g., a Google Reader SSB made with Fluid.app) that would launch from the "Go To Reader" command in place of the standard URL. (March 04, 2009)
00matze@googlemail.com
i have found the reader notifier cash problem! if i klick more then two growl messages from reader notifier then crashes the app. (March 08, 2009)
jaredwhittle
It looks like the "Mark All As Read" is broken. Maybe Google changed how they mark things as read. I've tried it on two different computers. (April 03, 2009)
Gyroscope352
I am having an issue with Reader Notifier that I've seen others have but have not seen any solutions posted - the unread number in the menu bar quickly becomes incorrect as it increases - it is showing nearly twice as many unread feeds as I actually have. How do I fix this? (May 03, 2009)
piersdd
great App. would it be possible to modify the preference "Only display items with label (optional)", by way of specifing some labels that are NOT to be displayed. Perhaps by prefixing a -Neg sign to the label. thanks for the fab app. (May 08, 2009)
m.green84
I would like to see a Command Line query so those who use geektool can have something sensible to get their unread feed count on their desktop for example /Applications/Reader\ Notifier.app/cli -check returning "Unread: 42" (May 16, 2009)

When is a Snow Leopard compatible version coming? I love your product but just installed Snow Leopard and it has stopped functioning. I have read comments elsewhere that confirm this is the case. Also, if you develop an iPhone app I'd be happy to buy it from you! (August 19, 2009)
lukas.metzger
Just wanted to second the plea for Snow Leopard compatibility - haven't realized how much I've come to depend on this fine piece of code! (August 21, 2009)
bret.mcvey
REQUEST: I would love to have the option for the Growl Notifications to read "You have ### unread items in Google Reader" or something like that. Even having the option to customize the output message. The reason being is that I like using Reader Notifier notifications with Prowl and iPhone and it would be great to know the actual unread count when the push notification comes down to the phone. (August 26, 2009)
bdwilson
Please please please make this work for Snow Leopard. I'd even pay for this software as I rely on it daily! (August 26, 2009)
tdmurphy
I second the Snow Leopard requests! I have never realized how much I have grown attached to Reader Notifier since I first got it. Thank you very much for developing it in the first place. (August 26, 2009)
apn.nichols
I, too, would love it to work with Snow Leopard! I love Reader Notifier!! (August 28, 2009)

I've fixed this so it works with Snow Leopard. It really is just a matter of making sure the error variables are initialized, and then recompiling the code. I will try to contact Troels and let him know. (August 30, 2009)
mattpol
Pleaase, please update this to work with Snow Leopard. This program is so useful! Thanks! (August 30, 2009)
bdwilson
Thanks to bucweat for the tips and advice. For those of you who don't want to do your own patching (or if you do), I've put a binary and the necessary changes into an archive: http://bit.ly/qzsiC (August 30, 2009)

Awesome. Thanks to bucweat and bdwilson! I wasn't sure which error variables needed to be initialized or what values to initialize them too. Works like a charm now. (August 31, 2009)

Many thanks for your efforts, bucweat and bdwilson! Much appreciated! (August 31, 2009)

Seriously, you guys and gals are amazing. Thanks for updating this. I'm complete again now that iStat and Reader Notifier are set for Snow Leopard. (Ok, so maybe it's not the end-all, but y'all are the bee's knees). (September 09, 2009)

Is there a quick fix for the escaped html entities that are popping up in my list, like "NYT
>
Technology" ... (November 20, 2009)
danielbendorf
The "Unable to connect to Google" error is a Snow Leopard error. It is fixed in this binary posted by user bdwilson earlier: http://bit.ly/qzsiC (November 25, 2009)
